The first Tuesday lesson in Term 2 was conducted today, its task was Portrait Relief making. I’ve noticed portrait reliefs have emerged as though these were Roman sculptures.

Making reliefs of human faces can be 2.5 D, which means that these are categorised neither 3D nor 2D.  The real depth of face is compressed dramatically on the flat surface to express the face as a relief but it still has an actual volume. Not flat and not volume. That’s I said it as 2.5 D.

Anyway, Portrait Relief making is not easy.

However, children had tried to make it and tried not to give up, all of them had tackled this difficult task.

Representing natural human faces can be a sort of challenge because of the facial proportion. In fact, expressing your face then you made the distance between the right eye and the left eye too close or too far that the face would have become a face of someone else.  This proportion difficulty is also applied to other facial parts how much distance each facial part needs to have from another part.

We paid a big attention to the proportion.

Today’s work below you can see.

Each portrait work has a natural proportion of the face. We can effortlessly recognise a relief face with a natural human facial expression.

The coming week, we will colour portrait reliefs to get work done.
