今年度最後の課題「干支」の版画を開始しました。
2018年の干支は「戌」、さてさて、どんな作品が完成するのでしょうか。

課題名の通り、来年の干支の”戌”を描いていきます。
この版画の課題では「フォーム・コア板」という高密度の発砲スチロール製の板を使って行います。
版画の下描きをしたら、そのフォーム・コア板に下絵を転写して鉛筆や竹串などで引っ掻いて描いていきます。
その引っ掻いた線が、版画の”線”となって最終的に紙に印刷されます。
文字や数字を印刷する場合は、反転するので、反転した状態の文字を彫っていきます。
うーん、なんだか頭がこんがらがりますね〜。

We commenced a new activity in today’s class which was that “Dogs Block Prints.”
The reason of why we have made prints of dogs, so it is that a dog will be the animal symbol in 2018 based on the cultural context of Asia. In this printmaking, we have used foam core boards as materials for block printing. Foam core boards are not hard surface materials and the surface can be easily lined, scratched and engraved with pointy tools such as sharpened pencils. This can be a safe way children to engrave on, rather than using carving knives engraving on wooden boards.
At the first step to making anything, a preparation of a plan towards to reach the goal is required so that children have drawn sketches for their final prints. The sketches can be traced using tracing paper to transfer an image drawn to the surface of foam core board and lines of the transferred image were engraved with pencils. In this transferring step, numbers and letters can be reversed in a horizontal direction, so the transferred images on the surface that need to be reversed. Oh dear, it is a bit confusing, isn’t it?
All we are looking forward to completing the block prints by lining, scratching and engraving as fun printmaking.
